Women's and Gender Studies students also acquire strong backgrounds for careers in areas such as counseling, education, human resources, international development, public policy, politics, business, and law. Because they have developed a thorough understanding of gender, race, and class, graduates work effectively with employers, colleagues, and clients to analyze and solve complex social problems. Graduates from this program are skilled in critical thinking, research methods, and effective communication. By promoting social justice and inclusion, this area of study focuses on the connections between personal experience and political activity, and validates student contributions and voices. It encourages students to explore the contexts and ideological origins of knowledge and to examine the relationship between knowledge and power in society.
Women’s and Gender Studies seeks to improve critical thinking and to provide students with the intellectual means to question prevailing assumptions. The field of women's and gender studies creates an understanding that interrelated factors-e.g., race, ethnicity, class, age, disability, gender identity, religion, national origin, and sexual orientation-inform knowledge of women’s history, culture, and social roles.
The program offers students opportunities to analyze issues concerning women, gender, and sexuality in diverse cultural contexts and to investigate a variety of disciplines from feminist perspectives. It is our hope that this gender-sensitive perspective will lead students to ask the kinds of critical questions that are essential to imagining and creating an inclusive and equitable society. Our curriculum is designed to develop a gender-sensitive perspective that will influence students' academic, professional, and personal development. Our undergraduate and graduate coursework also emphasizes the link between theory and practice and encourages applied learning through internships, community involvement, and service-learning. Our curriculum prepares students to understand how gender has shaped their own lives, the lives of others, the production of knowledge, and social institutions. We also sponsor a first-year learning community called "Gender Excellence: Where Academics Meets Activism" (GenX) as well as a Women's and Gender Studies Honor Society, Iota Iota Iota (Triota). The Women's and Gender Studies Program at UNC Charlotte offers an undergraduate minor in Women's and Gender Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies. Recognizing that gender varies widely over time and space, the program emphasizes a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, with faculty employing a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches. In our research, teaching, programming, and service we explore gender as it intersects with multiple categories, such as race, ethnicity, social class, age, ability, nationality, and sexuality.
Using a feminist perspective, the program seeks to understand the cultural, political, and historical processes that gender human identity and society. We view gender as a category of analysis that includes women, men, transgender, and gender-nonconforming individuals. The Women's and Gender Studies Program at UNC Charlotte explores the ways that gender influences social structures and individual experiences around the world.
